The #NotTooYoungToRun bill, which was signed into law in 2018, has been branded as the “worst day” of former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung’s life. This dramatic assertion came during a recent virtual lecture organized by Crisp Nigeria (CrispNG).
The bill, passed by the Ahmed Lawan-led National Assembly and signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari, was designed to lower the age qualifications for political offices. The revised ages are 30 for the presidency and governorship, 30 for Senate seats, 25 for the House of Representatives, and 25 for State House of Assembly members.
Dalung criticized the legislation, suggesting it was merely a symbolic gesture intended to appease the youth rather than effect real change. According to Dalung, the bill did not address the economic barriers faced by young aspirants, which include the hefty costs of running for office. For example, some political parties charged up to ₦100 million for presidential tickets in recent elections, a sum beyond the reach of many young candidates.
“The #NotTooYoungToRun bill was just ceremonial and did not address the economic capacity of the youth to contest elections,” Dalung stated. He argued that while the law reduced age limits, it did nothing to alleviate the financial burdens imposed by political parties. This, he claimed, made the bill a form of “political hypocrisy.”
Dalung also criticized what he described as deliberate blackmail of the youth by older generations. He pointed out that when young people are appointed to positions, they are often chosen by older leaders who then blame the youth for any failures, further undermining their potential contributions.
