Federal Government Extends Deadline for Civil Servants’ Payroll Verification Again
A new circular, signed by the IPPIS management and obtained by our correspondent on Sunday, confirmed that the process of collating and validating all submitted information has already begun. The initial directive, issued by the Accountant-General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Madein, set a deadline of July 31 for all federal civil servants to verify their identities on the IPPIS portal. However, this deadline was later extended by two weeks, ending on August 15, due to the large number of employees yet to complete the process.
This verification mandate was prompted by a report from a citizen living abroad who revealed that he had continued receiving his monthly salary despite having left Nigeria years earlier. In response to this alarming revelation, President Bola Tinubu ordered that all civil servants drawing salaries from the government while living abroad should refund the money. He also emphasized that supervisors and department heads found complicit in such fraudulent activities would face disciplinary actions.
President Tinubu expressed his concern during a recent visit to South Africa, where he was informed by the Head of the Civil Service about the issue of employees living abroad while still receiving salaries. He praised the steps taken to address the problem but stressed the importance of holding those responsible accountable.
“The culprits must be made to refund the money they have fraudulently collected. Their supervisors and department heads must also be punished for aiding and abetting the fraud under their watch,” Tinubu stated.
The latest circular, titled “Notification of Closure of Payroll Validation Portal,” outlines the new deadline for civil servants to update their information. It states, “The Treasury Circular with Ref. No. TRY/A6&B6/2024-GAGF/CAD/026/Vol. V/2024, dated June 27, 2024, extended the deadline for the Payroll Validation Portal to midnight on Thursday, August 15, 2024.”
The circular further warns that any employee who fails to comply with the directive by the new deadline of August 23, 2024, will be suspended from the payroll.
