Oshiomhole Exposes Protest Secrets: ‘We Had Antidotes To Tear Gas And Used ThemFormer Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Adams Oshiomhole has shared insights from his tenure leading worker protests and his encounters with police resistance. In an interview on Channels Television’s The August Protests on Saturday, the Edo North Senator commented on the inherent challenges of protests, noting that while police actions might be uncomfortable, they are part of managing public demonstrations.

“Protests are never easy, and police often have to make tough decisions. It’s a global norm for protests to be met with some form of resistance,” Oshiomhole said.

He recounted times when his team had antidotes to tear gas and would respond in kind. “We had antidotes for tear gas and sometimes threw it back at the police,” he shared. Despite this, he acknowledged that police actions are not always deliberate but rather necessary for managing situations.

Oshiomhole praised the civil behavior of police during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests, highlighting instances where police in states like Lagos distributed water to peaceful protesters. “Under this IG, the police have been notably civil,” he said.

Addressing calls from some protesters for a ‘take back’ of Nigeria following the 2023 election, Oshiomhole emphasized that constitutional processes dictate that changes in government should occur through elections. He stressed that Nigeria is not under foreign occupation, and the only lawful way to address grievances is through waiting for the next election cycle.

“You can’t demand regime change outside the constitutional framework. The proper channel is through the next elections,” Oshiomhole concluded.
