Nationwide Protests Rock Nigeria: Tinubu Demands End To Unrest, Vows To Address Economic IssuesIn a nationwide address on Sunday, President Bola Tinubu urged for an immediate end to the ongoing protests that have erupted across Nigeria since August 1. During his speech, Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the violence and unrest that have marked the demonstrations. He called for a halt to the protests and emphasized the need for dialogue.

Full Speech Excerpt:

“I address you today with a heavy heart and a profound sense of responsibility, fully aware of the chaos and violence that have emerged in several states. The young Nigerians leading these protests are driven by a desire for a better future and a country where their aspirations can thrive.

“I am deeply troubled by the loss of lives in states like Borno, Jigawa, Kano, and Kaduna, as well as the destruction of public property and the looting of stores. Such actions set us back as a nation, diverting vital resources from their intended purposes.

“I extend my condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives. It is crucial that we put an end to further bloodshed and violence.

“As your President, I am committed to maintaining public order. In line with my constitutional duty to protect all citizens, we cannot allow a few individuals with political motives to disrupt our nation.

“I call upon both protesters and organizers to cease further demonstrations and engage in constructive dialogue. Our nation requires unity and collective effort to forge a brighter future. I warn those who exploit this situation to incite division or ethnic tensions: the law will pursue you, and there is no place for such actions in the Nigeria we are striving to build.

“Democracy thrives when every Nigerian’s constitutional rights are upheld. Law enforcement should continue to protect lives and property while respecting human rights.

“My vision is for a just and prosperous Nigeria where democracy ensures peace, freedom, and a fulfilling livelihood for all. We are addressing long-standing economic issues that have plagued our country. The removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange systems were difficult but necessary steps to overcome decades of economic mismanagement.

“In the past 14 months, significant progress has been made. Government revenues have more than doubled, reaching over ₦9.1 trillion in the first half of 2024. The non-oil sector is showing promising growth, and productivity is improving.

“We have reduced debt service from 97% of revenue to 68% and cleared $5 billion in foreign exchange obligations. These measures allow us to invest more in essential services like education and healthcare and provide unprecedented allocations to state and local governments.

“Our administration is also investing in infrastructure, including major projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Sokoto-Badagry Highway, which will create jobs and boost economic activity.

“The oil and gas sector is revitalizing, with increased production and new foreign investments. Our Compressed Natural Gas Initiative aims to reduce transportation costs and curb inflation, saving billions of Naira.

“We are committed to supporting the youth through initiatives like the student loan scheme and consumer credit programs. Our Digital and Creative Enterprises program and various skill development initiatives are creating job opportunities and fostering global competitiveness.

“Significant financial support has been allocated to state governments, micro-businesses, and large manufacturers to stimulate economic growth. The recent increase in the national minimum wage and housing projects reflect our commitment to improving living standards.

“I recognize the frustration driving the protests, and I want to assure you that our government is listening and working to address these issues. However, violence and destruction will only hinder our progress. Let us work together to build a prosperous future for Nigeria.

“Let’s embrace hope, unity, and progress. The economy is recovering, and I urge you not to undermine this progress. As we celebrate 25 years of democracy, let us reject any attempts to derail our democratic journey. FORWARD EVER, BACKWARD NEVER!

“In conclusion, security forces must continue to uphold peace and order while respecting human rights. The safety of all Nigerians remains our top priority.

“Thank you for your attention, and may God continue to bless our great nation.”

He added that those who manage to thrive independently without such connections are fortunate, noting, “If you don’t belong to any group or gang, you might end up spending a lot without seeing any return”.

In squad news, FC Basel winger Philip Otele has joined the team in Warsaw, bringing the roster to 21 players. Otele, who was instrumental in the recent Unity Cup victory over Jamaica, is expected to begin the match on the bench due to his late arrival.

Captain Wilfred Ndidi emphasized that while the coaching staff is focused on long-term development, maintaining the team’s current unbeaten streak—four wins and a draw in their last five games—remains vital. “Of course, it’s about winning, but development also counts. A match against such a top rival as Poland will be a good test for our vision for the future,” Ndidi remarked, as quoted by przegladsportowy.onet.
