Protests Won’t Fix Anything!’ – Sylva Calls On Nigerians To Shun August 1 DemonstrationsTimipre Sylva, former Petroleum Minister and ex-Governor of Bayelsa State, has urged Nigerian youths, particularly those from Bayelsa and the Niger Delta, to reconsider their planned protest scheduled for August 1. “The proposed protest should be called off. Agitation and protests have not proven effective in solving problems; instead, constructive engagement is the key to finding solutions,” Sylva said. He acknowledged that while the right to peaceful assembly is enshrined in Nigeria’s Constitution, meaningful change comes from non-toxic dissent and collaborative dialogue.
Sylva praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for initiating significant empowerment and employment schemes aimed at improving the lives of youths and citizens. He reassured that the President is attentive to the challenges and is committed to addressing them, though such progress takes time.
“President Tinubu has begun a major economic revival, continuing the solid groundwork laid by his predecessor. Building a robust economy is a gradual process, and the President’s promises will materialize with time,” Sylva explained. He highlighted the recent grant of full autonomy to the 774 Local Government Areas as a step toward creating more employment and development at the grassroots level.
Sylva cautioned against uncoordinated protests, warning that they could be exploited by opportunists with harmful agendas. “Unplanned protests could lead to unpredictable and dangerous outcomes, as some individuals might exploit the situation for their own purposes,” he noted.
He concluded by urging youths to support the President and exercise patience, emphasizing that progress is underway and dismissing the idea of disrupting the nation’s efforts for improvement
