Minister Warns Niger Delta: Shun Protest Or Risk Economic Ruin! The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Abubakar Momoh, has called on residents of the oil-rich region to avoid participating in the upcoming nationwide protest.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, Momoh argued that the protest does not serve the region’s best interests and appears to be orchestrated by unknown individuals aiming to disrupt governance.

He warned that such actions could have detrimental effects on the region’s economy.

“I want to make it clear that August 1st is a date suspected to be used by faceless individuals to incite protests,” Momoh said. “The entire Niger Delta should not be involved because those planning it are not residents in Nigeria. Most of them are outside the country, living in comfort while they attempt to destabilize our nation.”

Referring to the #EndSARS protest, Momoh said, “You saw the #EndSARS in Lagos and the massive destruction it caused. If Lagos didn’t have a strong economy, it would have been difficult to recover. Imagine such a protest happening in Port Harcourt or the Niger Delta region. We are not as resilient as Lagos. We are the ones who will suffer.”

He appealed to traditional rulers, youth, and women to avoid being deceived. “This is not about President Tinubu; it’s about those who want to disrupt Nigeria. No nation that wishes us well wants to see us succeed. Remember, they predicted Nigeria’s collapse by 2015, yet we survived. They are surprised at our progress.”

Momoh emphasized the responsibility of the media to highlight the unnecessary and harmful nature of such protests. “As the fourth estate, it’s your duty to inform the world that this protest is irrelevant and detrimental.”

He also addressed the youth of Ogoni, urging them to consider the ongoing developments in their regions and not be swayed by external influences.

Some Nigerians are mobilizing for a 10-day nationwide protest from August 1 to August 10, 2024, to address concerns about widespread hunger and inflation. While President Bola Tinubu has acknowledged the democratic right to protest, he emphasized that his administration will not tolerate demonstrations resulting in property destruction or loss of life.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
