Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and explosions erupting from within the prison around midday, prompting a swift but ultimately futile response from security forces. The inmates managed to overpower the facility, smashing through armored gates, barbed wire, and trenches.

In response, Niger’s Interior Minister issued a broadcast urging governors, village chiefs, and religious leaders to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. A curfew has been imposed in the Tillabéri region, with heightened alert across the River Niger area.

ECOWAS Court Dismisses Lawsuit Over Niger Sanctions

In related news, the ECOWAS Court of Justice has dismissed a lawsuit challenging the sanctions imposed on Niger following the July 26, 2023, military coup. The court, led by Justices Edward Asante, Dupe Atoki, and Sengu Koroma, ruled that the case was no longer relevant as the sanctions had been lifted by ECOWAS.

The lawsuit, filed on August 8 by the Incorporated Trustees of Egalitarian Mission for Africa (EMA), Professor Bola Akinterinwa, and lawyer Nuhu Dantani, sought to contest sanctions that included electricity cuts and movement restrictions. However, during proceedings, attorney Ifunanya Okeke moved for the case to be dropped, citing the resolution of the issues as the electricity was restored and movement restrictions were lifted.

The court agreed, striking out the case, with respondents from the Federal Ministry of Justice, Abuja, not objecting or seeking costs.
