The EFCC made this announcement during an Anti-Corruption Walk in Port Harcourt, organized by the Port Harcourt Zonal Command in collaboration with Civil Society Organizations, sister security agencies, and Relief International Africa. The event marked the 2024 African Union Anti-Corruption Day, themed “Effective Whistleblower Protection Mechanism: A Critical Tool in the Fight Against Corruption.”

Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC’s Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate, Adebayo Adeniyi, highlighted the unique challenges of combating corruption in the region, citing oil theft and other crimes as particularly prevalent. Adeniyi noted that the criminal landscape in Rivers State differs significantly from other regions, such as Abuja, due to the area’s specific illegal activities, including bunkering.

“Having been here for over three months, I’ve observed that the nature of criminal offenses in Rivers State is distinct due to its terrain and activities,” Adeniyi remarked. “This region experiences a higher level of criminal activity related to oil theft and other unique crimes.”

The Acting Director reported that, despite the high number of ongoing investigations and prosecutions, the EFCC has achieved over 60 convictions this year alone. He emphasized the agency’s continued efforts to address internet fraud, which remains a significant issue among local youth.

Adeniyi urged the public to provide valuable information to assist the EFCC, stressing that whistleblowers would be protected. “We need more public cooperation to fight corruption effectively,” he said. “Many people are unaware that they can safely report information. Today’s campaign aims to increase awareness and encourage more people to come forward.”

The EFCC remains committed to tackling internet fraud and other financial crimes, striving to reduce their prevalence and impact in Rivers State.

Three suspects, identified as Chinedu David (29), Ezeagwu Chukwuma (38), and Ifeanyi Ogbeanyi (45), were arrested during the operation. Lagos State Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani announced that the suspects were apprehended Saturday night while transporting the contraband in an unregistered MAN diesel truck.

The truck and the items, which included dozens of sacks of military uniforms and cartons of substances believed to be illicit drugs, were taken into custody. Preliminary investigation suggests the military gear was destined for the South-East region of Nigeria. Investigators are working to identify the source, owner, and intended recipients of the goods. They are also examining the level of involvement of the suspects and tracking potential co-conspirators.

While CP Tijani assured Lagos residents that the discovery poses no immediate security threat to the state as the items were being moved elsewhere, he expressed concern regarding the recovery due to historical connections between criminal organizations and the use of military-style uniforms. A police source confirmed that the truck’s driver and assistant were the first suspects detained, followed by two additional suspects who later came to a Surulere police station claiming ownership of the seized items.
