Rivers LG Lockdown: CLO And 40 CSOs Plan Massive Anti-Police Protest

Writing by Sediq Mutari....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a bold move against recent police actions, the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) and over 40 affiliated civil society organizations (CSOs) have announced plans for a statewide protest. This decision comes in response to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun’s refusal to withdraw police personnel from the 23 local government council secretariats in Rivers State.

Background of the Crisis

The unrest began when Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, acting on orders from the IGP, deployed officers to the councils following the expiration of the previous chairmen’s tenure. As a result, the newly sworn-in caretaker chairmen have been forced to operate from non-official locations such as homes and hotels.

Statewide Protest Threat

CLO South-South Zonal Chairman, Comrade Enefaa Georgewill, condemned the blockade of the council secretariats, describing it as an insult to the people of Rivers State. He issued a seven-day ultimatum to the police to vacate the secretariats or face a massive statewide protest.

“We give the Nigerian Police until Friday, June 28, 2024, to withdraw their personnel from the 23 local government secretariats. We are currently consulting with our affiliates and preparing for a protest if the police do not comply,” Georgewill stated.

NULGE Demands Access for Workers

Echoing similar sentiments, the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Rivers State called for the police to leave the council premises. NULGE Chairman, Comrade Clifford Paul, stressed the urgency of allowing local government employees to resume their duties without interference.

Legal and Political Reactions

Former APC spokesman, Mr. Sogboye Eli, labeled the police siege as unconstitutional and provocative. He emphasized that no court had authorized such action and called for the immediate withdrawal of police forces from the council secretariats.

Nwuche’s Appeal for Peace

Amidst the tension, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prince Chibudom Nwuche, urged Rivers youth to avoid violence and support President Bola Tinubu and FCT Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike. Nwuche praised Wike’s contributions to infrastructural development both in Rivers State and Abuja, advocating for continued support for their leadership.

Nwuche also addressed the political crisis between Wike and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, which has escalated to affect all 23 local councils. He reassured his supporters of his commitment to the welfare and development of the Ekpeye people.

Conclusion

As the deadline approaches, all eyes are on the Nigerian Police Force and their response to the ultimatum. The CLO, NULGE, and other CSOs remain steadfast in their demand for the restoration of normalcy in Rivers State’s local government operations.
