In a decisive operation against illegal oil activities, the Nigerian Army dismantled approximately 14 vessels engaged in oil theft in Asa Community, Abia State, on Friday. This operation took place at Isimmiri Waterside in Ukwa West Local Government Area, where military personnel destroyed the vessels, including eight large boats from Cotonou, seizing crude oil in the process.

Successful Military Operation

Under the command of Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, the army apprehended six individuals involved in the illicit oil bunkering activities. These suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and legal proceedings.

Details of the Operation

Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada emphasized that this operation is part of the ongoing efforts under Operation Udoka, aimed at preventing economic sabotage and ensuring regional stability. He explained that the army had been conducting operations since Thursday to thwart attempts to steal crude oil, which is vital to Nigeria’s economy.

Intelligence and Strategy

The operation was based on secret intelligence, revealing that the culprits had begun stealing oil from pipelines before their apprehension. The suspects had already sunk several boats filled with stolen oil before the military’s arrival, and efforts are underway to recover more vessels.

Army’s Commitment to Economic Security

All 14 boats were sunk according to established protocols. Maj.-Gen. Dada stated that the main perpetrator at this location is currently at large but assured that he would be apprehended soon. He noted that this was likely part of a larger cartel financing acts of terrorism.

“This operation is just the beginning,” Dada warned. “The Nigerian Army will continue to pursue such activities relentlessly, leaving no stone unturned to protect the country’s economy from sabotage.”

This operation highlights the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to combating illegal oil activities and ensuring the economic security of the nation.
