Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has signed three significant Executive Orders, marking a pivotal moment for the state’s governance and development.

Two of these orders establish new agencies: the Ogun State Mineral Resources Development Agency and the Ogun State Landscaping and Recreation Agency. The third order prohibits traditional leaders from entering into agreements or Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) concerning land within the state.

New Agencies for Development

The governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, detailed these initiatives in a statement issued on Saturday in Abeokuta. He highlighted the mission of the Mineral Resources Development Agency, which is to work closely with local communities to conduct comprehensive geological surveys of mineral deposits. This agency will facilitate collaborations between the state and host communities to maximize the benefits of the state’s mineral wealth.

The Ogun State Landscaping and Recreation Agency is tasked with advancing environmental regeneration and restoration. It will oversee the creation and maintenance of parks, gardens, and recreational centers across the state, aiming to preserve biodiversity and enhance the ecosystem.

Restriction on Traditional Leaders

The third Executive Order restricts traditional leaders from making any land-related deals, particularly concerning mining or industrial activities. This measure is intended to prevent unauthorized agreements that bypass governmental oversight and regulations. Traditional leaders are now barred from signing MoUs or issuing consent letters for such activities.

Immediate Implementation

These executive orders, which take immediate effect, are designed to promote effective governance and sustainable development.

Executive Order One: Based on Section 5(2) of the 1999 Constitution, this order empowers the Mineral Resources Development Agency to conduct geotechnical and geological surveys of solid mineral deposits. The agency will be funded through regulatory fees, budget allocations, grants, and other legitimate contributions.

Executive Order Two: Supports the Ministry of Environment’s tree-planting campaign and mandates the new agency to manage parks and recreation centers. It will be funded similarly to the first agency.

Executive Order Three: Ensures that traditional leaders refrain from unauthorized land agreements. Violations will result in sanctions under the Kings and Chiefs’ Law and other relevant criminal statutes.

Governor Abiodun’s administration aims to ensure a sustainable, healthy, and beautiful environment while regulating land use to protect the state’s interests and natural resources.
