Previously priced between ₦50,000 and ₦80,000 in April, the sudden surge in tomato prices has left many reeling, particularly with the approaching Eid El-Kabir celebrations. Traders attribute the drastic increase to seasonal fluctuations in tomato production, exacerbated by the onset of the rainy season.

Umar Tanko, a trader at Mile 12 market in Lagos, revealed that the price surge represents over a 100% hike since April. He noted that even lower-quality tomatoes, damaged during transit from the North to the South, now command prices ranging from ₦60,000 to ₦100,000.

Echoing similar sentiments, another trader, Shefiu, operating in Ikorodu, Lagos, highlighted a reduction in tomato supply due to the rainy season, signaling the end of the current tomato variety in circulation. He proposed importing tomatoes from neighboring countries like Cameroon and Ghana to address the shortage.

The impact of soaring tomato prices extends beyond Lagos, with reports from states like Kwara, Edo, Abuja, and Delta mirroring the trend. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the price of 1kg of tomatoes has surged by 131.58% year-on-year between April 2023 and April 2024, with a further 17.06% increase recorded between March and April 2024.

As Nigerians grapple with the exorbitant cost of tomatoes, there are growing concerns about its implications for household budgets and food security. Urgent measures may be needed to address the root causes of this price surge and mitigate its impact on consumers across the country.
