EFCC Raises Alarm: Underage Boys Engage In Fraud Using Fake Age Declarations For Bank Accounts, LicencesThe Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sounded an alarm regarding the involvement of underage boys in internet fraud, popularly known as ‘Yahoo Yahoo,’ using fraudulent age declarations to open bank accounts and obtain driver’s licences. The agency has pledged to crack down on government agencies and individuals complicit in issuing fraudulent documents to these individuals.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Effa Okim, the Zonal Director of EFCC overseeing Edo, Delta, and Ondo states, made this revelation during a visit to the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Benin City, led by Festus Alenkhe.

Okim emphasized that Edo State ranks second in terms of convictions for internet fraud, trailing only behind Lagos despite its smaller size. He expressed concern over the prevalence of underage individuals involved in criminal activities, highlighting the disturbing trend of minors being convicted and sent to jail for fraudulent activities.

According to Okim, parents often collude with authorities to falsify age declarations, enabling their underage children to establish bank accounts and carry out criminal activities. He called out the complicity of parents who claim their children are underage when arrested, despite their involvement in facilitating the fraud.

The EFCC director urged parents to take responsibility for their children’s actions, questioning their role in obtaining driver’s licences and facilitating bank account openings for underage individuals, actions that contravene Nigerian laws.

In response to the rising incidence of internet fraud involving minors, the EFCC reiterated its commitment to collaborating with the media to combat crime and reduce its visibility on the streets.

Festus Alenkhe, the NUJ council leader, urged the EFCC to maintain transparency and accessibility to journalists, emphasizing the importance of disseminating accurate information to the public.

As the EFCC intensifies its efforts to tackle internet fraud, the revelation of underage individuals engaging in criminal activities underscores the need for stronger enforcement measures and heightened vigilance to protect vulnerable youth from exploitation and criminal influence.
