Sambisa Forest Devastated By Boko Haram Insurgency, Says ZulumBorno State Governor Babagana Zulum has appealed for urgent international assistance to rejuvenate the Sambisa Forest, which has suffered extensive devastation due to the prolonged Boko Haram insurgency.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Governor Zulum made this plea during his address at the United Nations High-Level Segment Roundtable, where he was part of a Nigerian delegation led by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawan, and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal.

In his speech, Governor Zulum emphasized the severe repercussions of the insurgency on Borno State, highlighting significant community displacement, infrastructure destruction, and profound economic losses. He underscored that the crisis has exacerbated environmental degradation, including deforestation and biodiversity loss in the Sambisa Forest.

Governor Zulum elaborated on the environmental impact of the conflict, citing soil erosion, decreased water availability, and heightened susceptibility to climate change effects. He particularly emphasized the adverse effects on Lake Chad, attributing its considerable shrinkage to climate change compounded by deforestation in areas like Sambisa.

To address these challenges, Governor Zulum outlined a comprehensive plan for Sambisa Forest’s rehabilitation, encompassing rehabilitation and restoration initiatives, community engagement, monitoring and evaluation, and the promotion of collaborations and partnerships. These efforts aim to restore the forest’s ecological balance and enhance the region’s overall environmental resilience.
