According to Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, Chief of Military Public Information for the MNJTF, the duo fled from the Kwalaram/Bakura Buduma camps after being engaged in combat for over a decade. Their decision to surrender came amidst heightened military efforts, both kinetic and non-kinetic, aimed at dismantling terrorist networks operating within Sector 3.
During interrogation, Ibrahim and Auwal confessed to their lengthy association with the Bakura Buduma camp, where they had actively participated in armed activities for 15 years in Kwalaram, located in Marte, Borno.
The recovery of weapons and other items from the surrendered militants underscores the significance of their defection. Ibrahim Muhammed was found with two AK-47 rifles, three AK-47 magazines, 90 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, two magazine carriers, and a mobile phone set. Meanwhile, Auwal Mohammed was in possession of five magazines, 101 rounds of 7.62-millimeter special ammunition, one X-mobile phone, two hand grenades, and a hand-held radio.
The MNJTF, comprising military units from Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, operates with a mandate to quell the Boko Haram insurgency.
