In response to the incident, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, announced that an investigation has been initiated by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, to ascertain the extent of the situation and determine appropriate measures.
The incident, which occurred amidst soldiers’ demands for better living conditions, led to the unfortunate shooting of Lcpl Charles Ekefure. The Army expressed regret over the incident, deeming it incompatible with the leadership style of the Chief of Army Staff.
While acknowledging the grievances expressed by the detained soldiers, the Army emphasized that mutiny and conduct prejudicial to service order are serious offenses. Despite the centralization of these services in Lagos, provisions have been established to protect existing appointments. Individuals who successfully secured appointments at the Abuja embassy prior to the transition will retain their status, ensuring that previously booked sessions remain honored by the mission. Nevertheless, the embassy noted that schedule adjustments may occur for certain candidates, prompting affected applicants to monitor their email accounts regularly for official notifications regarding potential rescheduling updates.
The advisory explicitly notes that routine visa services are exclusively available at the Consulate General in Lagos, emphasizing that the U.S. Embassy in Abuja ceased processing routine visa applications on August 1, 2026. While previously scheduled appointments will be accommodated, dates are subject to movement. Additionally, United States authorities confirmed that applicants possessing unused and valid Machine Readable Visa (MRV) application fee receipts retain the flexibility to utilize them when scheduling new appointment slots at the Lagos consulate. Travelers are encouraged to consult the official US visa appointment platform continuously to access up-to-date guidance concerning service availability, designated appointment locations, and operating hours.
