Stakeholders Advocate For INEC Chairman Appointment By Non-Partisan Committee....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Stakeholders engaged in the electoral process have appealed to the Federal Government to establish an independent committee comprising non-partisan individuals of exemplary character. This committee would be entrusted with the responsibility of nominating the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), rather than leaving this task solely to the President.
The call was made in a statement issued following the National Multi-Stakeholders Forum on Electoral Reform Priorities, organized by Youth Electoral Reform Priorities.
The stakeholders underscored the need to streamline INEC operations to enhance efficiency in the 2027 elections. They also emphasized the significance of the National Assembly’s commitment to finalizing the amendment of the Electoral Act and conducting a thorough review of the Constitution, ideally with a lead time of at least two years before the next general election.
According to the stakeholders, the procedures leading up to the 2023 general elections fell short of expectations.
In their statement, they outlined several recommendations, including the establishment of a National Electoral Offenses Commission empowered to prosecute electoral offenders. Additionally, the stakeholders urged the Federal Government to establish a specialized election committee comprising non-partisan individuals of impeccable character to assume the responsibility of appointing the Chairman of INEC, as well as INEC National Commissioners and Resident Electoral Commissioners.
Various organizations participated in the forum, including the Youth Electoral Reform Project, the National Association of Nigerian Students, the Nigerian Youth Parliament, representatives from various political parties, the Inter-Party Advisory Council, and the Conference of United Political Parties.
