The Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, is facing a pressing issue as refuse dumps and cow dung overrun residential areas, rendering them increasingly inhospitable.
A recent investigation by DAILY POST uncovered a disturbing trend in areas like Karu Site, Jikwoyi, Kurudu, Kubwa, Gwarinpa, Utako, and other regions under the jurisdiction of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC). Residents and cart pushers, colloquially known as ‘Baban Bola,’ are indiscriminately dumping refuse, while government efforts to maintain cleanliness are lacking.
The city center is plagued by water sachets, used cans, and other garbage strewn about, forming towering heaps left unattended for weeks. These refuse mounds encroach upon roads, posing serious health and environmental risks to residents.
Environmental experts warn of the dire consequences of improper waste disposal, including vector-borne diseases, air and water pollution, and food safety hazards, particularly near agricultural zones attracting pests.
Residents lament the irregular waste collection schedules, with bins overflowing for weeks before collection. Businesses like fast food shops suffer as customers avoid foul-smelling areas.
Officials from the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) acknowledge the severity of the situation, citing challenges in coordinating waste management across different areas under various councils. However, they stress the agency’s efforts to enforce cleanliness standards and collaborate with law enforcement to address issues like scavenging and herdsmen activities.
Despite assurances of intervention, residents continue to grapple with the mounting waste crisis, calling for urgent action to restore cleanliness and mitigate the threats to public health and livelihoods.
Political analyst Katch Ononuju has shed light on the strategic calculations behind former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi’s decision to temporarily align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and his subsequent departure from the platform.
