The Federal Government has unveiled plans to relocate certain correctional centres nationwide in the wake of the recent Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre incident, where 119 inmates escaped due to severe damage caused by a rainstorm.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the government’s intention during his visit to the affected facility. He emphasized the need to enhance space, security, and infrastructure, citing overcrowding as a persistent challenge in correctional centres across the country.
With the Suleja facility built in 1914 to accommodate 250 inmates but currently housing 499, Tunji-Ojo underscored the imperative of relocating centres away from city centres to create better conditions for inmates and improve operational efficiency.
Assuring proactive measures, the Minister stated that the ministry is actively working to revamp the correctional system for the benefit of all stakeholders. He expressed determination to prevent similar incidents in the future, highlighting the importance of timely dissemination of information and accountability in addressing structural vulnerabilities.
Tunji-Ojo’s commitment to taking responsibility and implementing necessary reforms underscores the government’s resolve to uphold security and uphold the integrity of the correctional system across the country.

The petition, brought by Kingsley Aneubuna, accuses the respondents of forgery, perjury, and criminal misrepresentation stemming from a property transaction regarding a Dutse District plot in Abuja. According to the petitioner, he purchased a terrace duplex on the land in 2018 after receiving assurances from Ezechukwu that the title was unencumbered, only to later discover existing litigation, a court injunction, and the alleged unauthorized use of his name in court processes, alongside a backdated and altered agreement.
During the proceedings, defense counsel D.O. Okolo urged the panel to dismiss the case, citing a letter from the petitioner expressing a desire to withdraw the matter. However, the committee rejected the request, ruling that its regulations do not allow for a withdrawal once issues have been joined, and subsequently reserved its decision for September 30.
