The World Institute for Peace (WIP) has voiced concern over reported instances of justices and judges granting bail to individuals accused of serious crimes such as terrorism, murder, and kidnapping.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Lamina Kamiludeen Omotoyosi, the group called upon the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to issue a stern warning to all justices and judges across courts in the country.

Expressing distress over the alleged practice, Omotoyosi emphasized that granting bail to individuals accused of such grave offenses poses a serious threat to society’s safety and security. He stressed the importance of keeping suspects in remand until after judgment to ensure public safety, particularly for the complainants and their families.

The statement further condemned the act, asserting that justices and judges have a duty to safeguard the public and uphold the rule of law. The WIP urged the Attorney General of the Federation to promptly address the issue and ensure that justice is served in Nigeria.

The group’s statement comes in response to recent incidents, including the granting of bail to Olalekan Oyeyemi, also known as Emir Ajagungbade, who faces charges including conspiracy, terrorism, unlawful killing, and arson, among others. Oyeyemi was granted bail by a Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, despite the serious nature of the accusations against him.
