On April 14, 2024, the Nigeria Navy Ship Luguard made a significant interception, seizing 620 tonnes of cannabis sativa, commonly known as Indian hemp, in Kogi State. Following this operation, one suspect, identified as Aliyu Lawal, was apprehended.
According to Commodore Mosses Epelle, the Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship Luguard, the interception occurred around 12 pm on April 4, 2024. Personnel at the Jamata checkpoint stopped a navy blue golf car with registration number HK511ABC, discovering 620 parcels of the suspicious substance.
While one of the two suspects managed to escape, Aliyu Lawal, the driver, confessed to transporting the substance from Edo State to Abuja, passing through Lokoja. Among the items recovered from the suspect were a Police MESS membership card and a camouflage jungle hat, which were used to navigate through checkpoints.
Despite Lawal’s attempt to bribe the personnel, they remained steadfast in upholding the core values of the Nigeria Navy, including professionalism, integrity, and teamwork.
Commodore Epelle emphasized the Navy’s commitment to combating insecurity in Kogi State, warning criminals to desist from illicit activities as the law would catch up with them.
Upon receiving the seized substance, Olorunfemi Abolarin, the superintendent of narcotics at the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kogi State Command, affirmed that an investigation would commence. Once concluded, the suspect would face charges in court.
Abolarin highlighted NDLEA’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking nationwide, stating that suspects apprehended in Kogi State would be prosecuted accordingly.
The seized cannabis sativa, weighing 110 kilograms, underscores the joint efforts of law enforcement agencies to curb drug trafficking and illicit activities in the region.
