The Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Ibaka, situated in the Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state, recently conducted a review of its anti-crime operations for the first quarter of 2024.

Capt. Uche Aneke, the Commanding Officer of the base, highlighted in a report shared with journalists that a total of 14 suspects were apprehended for various crimes during this period.

These suspects were detained for offenses such as smuggling, oil theft, cultism, economic sabotage, sea robbery, and other criminal activities within the joint operations area (JOA).

Aneke reiterated the Navy’s steadfast commitment to combating maritime crimes and economic sabotage in Nigeria’s waterways. The detained suspects have been handed over to relevant security agencies for further investigation and prosecution.

Aneke underscored that these arrests and seizures were not individual achievements but rather outcomes attained through operational implementation and tactical execution, contributing to maintaining relative calmness in the operational area’s security situation.

The Commander noted the Base’s successful efforts in minimizing criminal activities over the years through extensive operations in collaboration with security stakeholders within the joint operations area.

Furthermore, he disclosed that Operation Delta Sanity, inclusive of FOB Ibaka, has been bolstered by the dedication of FOB Ibaka and other participating bases.

In addition to operational measures, the base has employed 35 civilian workers who receive compensation and three meals daily. This initiative aims to enhance intelligence gathering for the base and foster positive relationships with local communities.

Aneke commended the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, for providing the Nigerian Navy with the necessary resources and moral support to safeguard the waterways effectively.

FOB Ibaka’s responsibilities encompass monitoring Nigeria’s Eastern flanks, including sea approaches from Calabar to the new international maritime boundaries with the Republic of Cameroon. This jurisdiction also covers land territories in Mbo, Udung Uko, and Oron LGAs of Akwa Ibom.
