According to PUNCH Online, the inferno was attributed to the improper refuelling of a generator in one of the buildings’ penthouses. In response to this tragedy, Governor Sanwo-Olu visited the site on Thursday to assess the damage and offer support to affected individuals.
Sharing his visit on Facebook, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed deep concern over the significant losses incurred and announced stringent measures to prevent such incidents in the future. He stated, “An integrity test on standing structures is now mandatory, and Dosunmu Market will remain closed until we can ensure the safety of all structures and compliance with regulations.”
Furthermore, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of enforcing building codes and preventing the misuse of residential properties to safeguard citizens’ safety. He assured affected individuals of government assistance and pledged to explore every avenue to prevent similar occurrences.
The tragic fire not only caused extensive property damage but also led to the destruction of goods worth millions of naira. It originated in a three-storey building on Jankara Street before spreading to adjacent structures within the market.
As investigations continue into the cause of the fire, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s decisive actions underscore the government’s commitment to prioritizing public safety and preventing future disasters.
