Afenifere Accuses NERC and Ministry Of Power Of Imposing Charges On Nigerians For Inefficiency....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and political organization, has leveled accusations against the Ministry of Power and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), alleging that they are compelling Nigerians to bear the burden of their inefficiency………READ ALSO

The organization has urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and compel the Ministry of Power to reverse the recent electricity tariff hike.

According to DAILY POST, NERC announced on Wednesday, April 4, 2024, that electricity consumers in Band A would now have to pay N225 per kilowatt hour, a significant increase from the previous N68 rate.

In a statement issued on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, Afenifere expressed concern that the 300% electricity tariff hike would hinder the current administration’s efforts to boost the economy, as businesses would face shrinkage.

Afenifere urged President Bola Tinubu to pressure the Ministry of Power to reconsider the tariff hike, explore alternative energy sources like solar and wind, review the terms of the 2013 exercise, and adopt more innovative approaches.

The organization questioned how businesses could thrive, especially under Tinubu’s aspirations, when the electricity tariff surged from N68 to N225 per kilowatt hour within a mere 24 hours of announcement.

It emphasized that it is inaccurate to assume that only direct enrollees in a particular Band benefit from the power supplied through that band.

Afenifere criticized the call for players in the power sector to ensure that consumers receive value for their payments, stating that this approach is akin to prioritizing revenue over efficient service delivery.

The organization highlighted that instead of rushing to increase charges for poorly rendered services, government agencies should first guarantee regular and efficient electricity supply.

Afenifere underscored the significant financial burden imposed by the tariff hike, with calculations indicating a substantial increase in monthly expenses for consumers.

The organization concluded by asserting that the focus of the Ministry and NERC seems to be on revenue generation rather than addressing the genuine concerns and hardships faced by Nigerians.
