In a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, Chidi Nwabuzor, on Friday, this stance was emphasized.
“This press release aims to inform the general public, particularly the law-abiding citizens of Edo State, about the Edo State Police Command’s stance on the searching of citizens’ phones by operatives during routine patrols, stop-and-search duties, and other operations within the state.
“The Commissioner of Police for Edo State, CP Funsho Adegboye, reiterated the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, regarding the prohibition of phone searches by police officers during patrols, raid operations, stop-and-search duties, or other essential tasks. He cautioned that under no circumstances should police officers engage in the searching of citizens’ phones while on duty.
“The CP, who has served in various capacities with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo, Liberia, East Timor, and the African Union Mission in Somalia, stated that officers may only search citizens’ phones when executing a court order from a competent court, as authorized by law for investigative purposes. Nonetheless, he strongly warned officers against the unprofessional conduct of conducting phone searches, emphasizing that any officer caught doing so will face severe sanctions,” the statement read.
The statement further urged the public to remain patient with the police and report any officer engaging in unprofessional behavior through dedicated telephone numbers: 07037376464, 08140275108, 08033726625, and 08164523045.
