The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended a 39-year-old fruit vendor, Dolapo Babalola, on charges of allegedly murdering his childhood friend, Evangelist Opeyemi Oyelakin, aged 34…….READ ALSO

Following the tragic incident, Babalola, alongside another accomplice named Sikiru Mutiu who is currently at large, reportedly stole the deceased’s motorcycle, which he utilized for commercial purposes, and sold it in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State, for the sum of N130,000.

In his confession, the suspect revealed that on March 15, he deceived the deceased into accompanying him to Oke-Igbo, a location near Ondo town, under the pretext of inspecting a piece of land. Upon arrival at the isolated area situated within a bush, Sikiru allegedly restrained the victim while Babalola fatally assaulted him with a stick and stone.

With concerns mounting over the disappearance of the father of one, his family filed a report, prompting law enforcement officers to swiftly launch an investigation. Tracking the call logs of the deceased led detectives to Babalola’s residence in Ondo town, where he was subsequently apprehended.

Expressing remorse for his actions, Babalola attributed the crime to malevolent influences, stating that although he had been involved in motorcycle thefts previously, this was the first instance of him resorting to murder. He admitted to having sold approximately 15 motorcycles in the past but emphasized that none of the previous incidents had resulted in violence.

The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Abayomi Oladipo, led a team of investigators and medical personnel to recover the victim’s decomposing body from a pit where it had been discarded in the bush. Condemning the callous nature of the crime, Oladipo expressed dismay at the failure of some landowners in the vicinity to report the distressing odor emanating from the area, despite its persistence for several days.

Investigations are ongoing, with efforts focused on apprehending Sikiru Mutiu and any other individuals involved in the heinous act, as confirmed by Commissioner Oladipo.
