The court’s decision, reached on Wednesday, March 27, marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of accountability for the heartbreaking incident.

The prosecution, led by counsel Adama Musa, presented compelling evidence that Makanjuola recklessly reversed his vehicle, resulting in the fatal injury of his wife on May 7, 2021, in Gwagwalada. The court heard how a heated dispute between the couple escalated, culminating in a regrettable and irreversible loss.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Angela Otaluka acknowledged the complexity of the case, noting the provocative actions that preceded the tragic event. Despite recognizing the deceased wife’s provocative behavior, which included throwing objects and stones at Makanjuola’s vehicle, Justice Angela emphasized that the defendant’s response was not a deliberate act of retaliation but rather a manifestation of lost control over his emotions.

“It was not a deliberate action, but sudden. The prosecution has failed to prove the intent of the defendant but has proven the offence of culpable homicide,” Justice Angela remarked, highlighting the nuanced nature of the case.

In considering the defendant’s character and circumstances, the defence counsel, Kolade Adeboyega, underscored Makanjuola’s responsible nature and his plans to reunite with his two children, who were under the care of their grandmother. Adeboyega appealed to the court for leniency, emphasizing the impact of imprisonment on the family’s well-being.

Responding to the plea, Justice Angela demonstrated a balanced approach, acknowledging the defendant’s time already spent in custody and the welfare of his children. Accordingly, she sentenced Makanjuola to four years in prison, encompassing the period he had already served, in accordance with Sections 222 and 224 of the Penal Code.

As the court proceedings concluded, the verdict stands as a testament to the solemnity of justice and the enduring quest for accountability in the face of tragedy. The sentence serves as a reminder of the profound consequences of reckless actions and underscores the importance of upholding the rule of law in safeguarding the sanctity of life and marital relations.
