According to the statement by NSCDC Rivers State Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Olufemi Ayodele, the discovery comprised over 10 illegal refineries containing an estimated 500,000 litres of crude oil across approximately 50 illegally constructed reservoirs, all based on credible intelligence.
Ayodele reiterated the NSCDC’s dedication to combating crude oil theft, illegal mining, and other illicit activities linked to petroleum products nationwide, echoing the firm stance of NSCDC Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, to pursue economic sabotage to the fullest extent, irrespective of sponsors.
During the operational tour of the area, various equipment and storage facilities, including cooking pots, pumping machines, rubber hoses, and galvanized pipes, were uncovered. Additionally, suspects caught in the act of illegally refining crude oil were apprehended and identified as Favour Chukwu (29), Desmond Umeh (25), Godwin Amos (22), Bineace Galion (38), and Goodnews David (23).
The suspects have been handed over to the Rivers State Command for further investigation and possible prosecution. Rivers State Commandant of the NSCDC, Basil Igwebueze, condemned the audacious tapping into oil well heads and illegal refining of crude oil, expressing gratitude for the unwavering efforts of the Special Intelligence Squad in safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure.
