During the first quarterly consultative meeting with CSOs in Abuja, Yakubu stressed the significance of their engagement with political parties and their observation of the primaries.
“As the Ondo State governorship election draws near, political parties are gearing up to commence their primaries within the next two weeks. Sixteen parties have indicated their interest in participating,” Yakubu stated.
He encouraged CSOs to closely observe the primaries and deploy observers, mirroring their involvement with INEC during the main election. Yakubu underscored that such engagement would bolster advocacy for inclusivity, particularly for marginalized groups such as women, youths, and Persons with Disabilities at both the National and State levels.
Yakubu also raised concerns about the Edo governorship poll, noting that only eight parties have uploaded their candidates’ particulars to the INEC portal with just four days left until the deadline.
“In the case of Edo State, only 18 political parties conducted primaries monitored by the commission. Political parties have a 20-day window from March 4, 2024, to upload candidate details as per the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the election,” Yakubu highlighted.
