The Kwara State Government recently conducted an operation to remove 46 beggars from strategic areas in Ilorin, the state capital. Expressing dissatisfaction with the persistent noncompliance of individuals who engage in begging as a daily source of income, Afolashade emphasized that such activities undermine the government’s efforts to create a conducive environment. She highlighted the environmental degradation and security threats posed by roadside begging, noting that some individuals exploit this practice to perpetrate crimes in the community.
During the evacuation, the authorities recovered daggers, knives, and charms from some of the beggars, further highlighting the complexities of the issue. Afolashade reaffirmed the commitment of the AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq-led administration to prioritize social upliftment and support for the economically disadvantaged, including the vulnerable, disabled, and less privileged segments of society.
Residents at various locations where the operation took place commended the government’s efforts and urged sustained action to completely eradicate the begging menace. The evacuation covered several areas in the city, including the G.R.A. area, Babatunde Idiagbon Flyover, Tanke, Offa Garage, Geri Alimi, Odota, and parts of the Baba Ode-Dangote area, known for a high concentration of street beggars.
The evacuated beggars were taken to the ministry’s facility for correction and rehabilitation, while their children received immediate care and protection at the Children Reception Centre. The operation involved the participation of the Director of Rehabilitation, Mr. Taiye Ikupolati, and other ministry staff, indicating a coordinated effort to address the issue comprehensively.
