According to the Nigerian Army statement issued on March 14, 2024, the troops’ coordinated efforts were instrumental in achieving these outcomes. One significant incident prompting the military response was an attack on an 18-seater bus at Gamkwe Village along Maraban-Baisa in Donga Local Government Area, leading to the disappearance of 15 passengers, including a baby.

Following diligent patrolling and search efforts, the troops cleared roadblocks and thoroughly searched nearby villages, recovering eight bodies, including that of the missing baby. Additionally, intelligence on armed militias surrounding Sanso village in Donga Local Government Area prompted swift action by the troops.

The armed militias, arriving from Anu village via the River Donga using a wooden canoe, had carried out nefarious attacks, including theft and kidnapping. In response, the troops engaged in a pursuit operation, rescuing three female kidnap victims and recovering four motorcycles, along with significant quantities of grains.

The operations demonstrate the Nigerian Army and Operation Whirl Stroke’s commitment to maintaining security and peace in Taraba, effectively combating threats posed by violent extremists and criminal elements. Community leaders, represented by Chairman Donga Local Government Area, Hon Ezra Voka, assured the military of continuous information and intelligence support.

Brigadier General Uwa emphasized the importance of seeking alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to achieve lasting peace in the region, urging community leaders and elites to refrain from jungle justice systems that often lead to reprisals and loss of innocent lives and property. Moving forward, a concerted effort is necessary to ensure long-lasting peace and stability in Taraba.
