Describing their daughter as a vibrant and joyful child, Jason remembered Sloan as “a beam of light,” while Therese emphasized her love for simple moments like dancing in the living room. The family was on vacation in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea when the incident occurred. Sloan and her brother Maddox, 9, were digging for seashells when the sand collapsed, trapping them underground.

Jason recalled the frantic moments as a blur, expressing how quickly the tragedy unfolded. Despite their immediate actions, they were unable to save Sloan from the weight of the sand. Others on the beach rushed to help, calling 911 and assisting in the rescue efforts. Maddox was pulled out first, but Sloan remained trapped for over 15 minutes before being freed. She was rushed to the hospital but tragically passed away.

The Mattingly family hopes that by sharing Sloan’s story, they can prevent similar accidents and raise awareness about beach safety. They emphasize the importance of water safety but admit that the danger of sand holes never crossed their minds before the incident. They urge beachgoers to be cautious and speak up if they notice any potential hazards.

As the spring break season approaches and families flock to beaches, the Mattinglys want to ensure that others are aware of the risks. They advocate for clearer warnings and guidelines about beach safety, including the depth of sand holes. Through their grief, they hope to prevent other families from experiencing the same devastating loss.
