The Enugu Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought charges against three former staff members of Access Bank, along with one other individual, for their alleged involvement in the misappropriation of N15,944,100 from the bank’s funds……..CONTINUE READING

The suspects—identified as Ogbu Kingsley Ibekwem, Nwagbara Chidimma, Uwaezuoke Raymond, and Chidubem Angela Mgbeke—are accused of embezzling the aforementioned sum before it was scheduled for transfer to the Central Bank, as per the bank’s standard procedure.

According to a statement by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the suspects were apprehended and handed over to the anti-graft agency by the Nottidge branch of Access Bank in Onitsha, Anambra State.

Appearing before Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Enugu State, the suspects faced a four-count charge, including conspiracy and theft.

One of the charges alleges that Ogbu Kingsley Ibekwe and Chidubem Angela Mgbeke conspired to retain the sum of N7,996,800, which was earmarked for transfer to the Central Bank. This act is said to contravene Section 21 (a) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022.

During the arraignment, the defendants pleaded “not guilty” to the charges leveled against them. Following their pleas, the EFCC’s counsel, Ahmad Yusuf Abdullahi, requested a trial date and urged the court to remand the defendants in the Enugu State correctional facility.

Justice Umar subsequently scheduled the trial for May 22, 2024, and ordered the defendants to be remanded in EFCC custody pending the hearing of their bail application.
