Pate made this announcement during the second edition of the Ministerial Press Briefing Series in Abuja, where he also disclosed that the Federal Government secured a $1 billion grant from Afriexim Bank and foreign partners to support medical industrialization efforts.

The minister addressed the recent surge in drug prices attributed to the foreign exchange crisis, assuring that the government is taking proactive steps to mitigate the situation. He highlighted the allocation of N50 billion from the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) to enhance the nation’s Primary Health Care (PHC) centers.

Furthermore, Pate emphasized the importance of addressing the shortage of medical professionals in the country. He revealed that the government has recruited 2,497 medical doctors, nurses, midwives, and Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) to bolster the healthcare workforce and improve service delivery.

In response to the exit of multinational drug firms like GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Sanofi, Pate outlined the government’s strategies, including the issuance of an Executive Order to curb escalating drug prices in the short term. Additionally, plans are underway to domesticate imported drugs within the next three years in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade.

To enhance the pharmaceutical infrastructure nationwide, the Federal Government initiated the construction of pharmaceutical-grade warehouses in 21 states and two additional warehouses at the federal level. These efforts are complemented by the installation of the Warehousing Management Information System (WMIS) – M Supply, aimed at improving drug distribution efficiency.

Pate concluded by highlighting the significant increase in healthcare funding, with the Federal Government releasing N50 billion as the first tranche of the Basic Healthcare Fund. This infusion of funds will rejuvenate primary healthcare facilities and ensure access to quality care for all citizens.

Overall, these initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to addressing healthcare challenges and improving healthcare delivery across Nigeria.
