According to Wole Odewumi, Chairman of the National Association of Non-Academic Staff of Universities (NASU) at the OAU branch, the incident occurred when Olawuyi courageously intervened to rescue a fellow staff member who was initially targeted by the lion. Despite his efforts, the lion turned its aggression towards Olawuyi, leading to his untimely demise.

Odewumi recounted, “The deceased intervened to free the woman from the lion. He must have assumed that the lion would recognize him. His intervention to free the woman must have infuriated the animal. The lion left the woman and attacked him squarely.”

Despite efforts to save Olawuyi, he succumbed to his injuries before reaching the campus health center. The university community, in solidarity, held a mourning procession in his honor, with the management meeting with his family to offer condolences and support.

In response to the incident, the university has closed the zoo and initiated measures to ensure the safety of its staff and visitors. Management has also pledged to form a committee to address the issues raised by the tragic event, with union representatives involved in the process.

As the OAU community grapples with the loss of Olabode Olawuyi, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with working closely with wildlife. The university’s commitment to investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack and implementing necessary safety measures underscores its dedication to preventing similar tragedies in the future.
