The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Ovye Aya, confirmed the incident during a telephone conversation with our correspondent on Thursday.
Aya identified the deceased as Bilikisu Eleojo, aged 20, and Ibrahim Haliru.
According to the police spokesperson, the fatal incident occurred as the generator emitted carbon monoxide into the room where the victims were sleeping, leading to their demise before dawn.
The lifeless bodies of the pair were discovered by neighbors in the early hours of Thursday.
Aya explained, “The tragic event unfolded with three students from Kogi State Polytechnic inside the room: Bilikisu Tijani Eleojo, aged 20, Ibrahim Haliru, and Mercy Ojochegbe. As they slept, a generator adjacent to their window was operational.
“Unbeknownst to them, the fumes from the generator filled the room, resulting in carbon monoxide inhalation. Bilikisu Tijani Eleojo and Ibrahim Haliru were found deceased by neighbors in the morning, while Mercy Ojochegbe, still alive, was promptly rushed to the hospital.”
The incident was promptly reported to the ‘B’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force in Lokoja, and an investigation is currently underway.
Aya urged residents to prioritize safety measures to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning incidents within their homes.
This tragedy echoes a similar event in December, where a young man and his girlfriend perished due to inhaling fumes from a generator kept inside their residence overnight in Ugborikoko community, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State. The couple had returned from celebrating the girlfriend’s birthday at a nightclub before the unfortunate incident occurred.

Emphasizing that the political framework inherently favors the incumbent All Progressives Congress (APC) because they control state power and law enforcement apparatuses, Duke warned that division and ego among opposition figures effectively work against their own interests. Using a striking analogy, he described taking on the incumbent as trying to fight a lion that has been given horns using only a knife and fork, concluding that the opposition would end up as “dinner” without a cohesive, unified approach.
The Federal Government has issued an urgent flood warning through the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre, cautioning that 915 communities spread across 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) face severe flooding risks from August 27 to September 9, 2026. The 19 states categorized under the critical-risk threat are Kogi, Benue, Rivers, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo, encompassing major cities like Lokoja, Port Harcourt, Lagos, Ibadan, and Onitsha. According to Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, this impending threat is driven by factors such as continuous rainfall, saturated soils, rapid surface runoff, strained drainage networks, and swelling river levels. Residents in these vulnerable areas have been strongly advised to ready themselves for potential emergencies and identify secure evacuation routes.
African Action Congress (AAC) 2027 presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has cautioned citizens against falling for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s stance on reversing the fuel subsidy. In response via an X post, Sowore rejected Atiku’s remarks, asserting that the AAC remains the sole political party that has steadfastly opposed the subsidy removal from the outset. He accused Atiku and other establishment politicians of shifting their stances based on political convenience and foreign capitalist interests, stating that they should not be permitted to rewrite history or masquerade as genuine opposition figures. Sowore further claimed that it was the AAC’s unwavering position at the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt that actually rattled the Tinubu government, rather than any actions from Atiku’s camp.
