In a recent development, 11 individuals posing as enforcement officers were apprehended for extorting money from unsuspecting motorists at the Ibeju-Lekki junction and Akodo area of the state.

The crackdown followed numerous complaints from residents and motorists about the illegal activities of these impostors. Speaking on behalf of the government, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa, emphasized the administration’s commitment to curbing such nefarious activities that cause hardship to citizens, especially during challenging economic times.

Musa reiterated that the government would not tolerate any form of extortion on the streets of Lagos. He highlighted that the suspects would face legal consequences for their actions and warned others engaged in similar activities to desist immediately.

Emphasizing the illegality of deploying individuals for revenue collection on the roads, Musa cited the Lagos State Road Traffic Law, which empowers only authorized agencies like the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to carry out such operations. He urged residents to report any extortion attempts, assuring them of swift government intervention to address their concerns.

The crackdown on extortion activities underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety and well-being of Lagos residents. It serves as a stern warning to would-be offenders that illegal activities will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will face the full weight of the law.
