The protest, organized by nurses under the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Abuja chapter, was a response to the NMCN’s release of updated guidelines for certificate verification on February 7, 2024. Nurses expressed concerns that these regulations could hinder their professional growth and opportunities.
During the peaceful demonstration at the NMCN’s office in Abuja, nurses voiced their frustrations, calling for a reconsideration of the new guidelines and urging the council to prioritize addressing critical issues affecting the nursing profession, including welfare, salary structures, staff shortages, and other fundamental rights.
In response, Registrar Faruk Abubakar assured the protesting nurses that their grievances have been heard and will be thoroughly addressed. He emphasized the council’s commitment to the well-being of nurses and midwives, affirming that the policy adjustments are intended to benefit Nigerians.
Abubakar acknowledged the nurses’ mobilization and promised a prompt resolution, underscoring the importance of addressing each concern raised by the nursing community.
He concluded by reaffirming the NMCN’s support for nurses and midwives, highlighting the imperative of working together to ensure policies align with the best interests of all stakeholders in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
