Earlier today, ECOWAS officials convened for an emergency session in Abuja, Nigeria, focusing on ministerial-level discussions at an Extraordinary Session of the Mediation and Security Council (MSC).

The primary objective of the gathering was to address the underlying issues behind the recent decision of the three countries to withdraw from the bloc. Additionally, the session tackled Senegal’s pressing electoral situation, emphasizing the significance of regional collaboration.

Touray emphasized that the formal notifications received from the three countries on January 29 regarding their withdrawal had significant implications that necessitated immediate attention.

He stated, “The justifications provided by the three countries for their actions include concerns about ECOWAS’ departure from the pan-African ideals of its founding fathers, perceived influence of foreign powers on ECOWAS, a sense of abandonment by ECOWAS in their fight against terrorism, and the imposition of what they consider illegal sanctions by ECOWAS.”

However, Touray stressed that these claims lack substantial evidence, and the decision to withdraw from ECOWAS was made hastily without considering the conditions outlined in the 1993 ECOWAS Revised Treaty.

He noted that the consequences of this decision on the citizens of the three member states had not been fully comprehended. Consequently, ECOWAS compiled two memoranda during the meeting, providing a thorough analysis of the broader implications of the withdrawal.

Regarding Senegal’s presidential election, Touray expressed concern over President Macky Sall’s decision to revoke a decree and delay the election, which has led to crises in the country and the sub-region.

As a result, an additional memorandum was prepared for consideration during the MSC session, urging participants to carefully evaluate the implications of the withdrawal of the three ECOWAS member countries.

Representing the African Union Commission (AUC), Moussa Faki Mahamat, through Bankole Adeoye, AUC’s Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, emphasized the urgent need to address ECOWAS issues, particularly in the context of ongoing security challenges in the region.
