Highlighting the potential to significantly reduce the annual number of new cancer cases and related deaths, Obi stressed the need for adequate healthcare infrastructure to facilitate early detection and proper management of cancer cases. He urged Nigerians to work towards creating a society free from the scourge of cancer by prioritizing healthcare and contributing to the nation’s development.

Obi stated, “Cancer, though a dangerous disease, has been empirically established that its effects on society can be controlled drastically if adequate healthcare is put in place to encourage early detection and adequate cure and care.”

Referring to statistics from the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment, which reports over 120,000 new cancer cases in Nigeria annually, Obi outlined the potential for a significant reduction in these numbers through enhanced healthcare provision.

Expressing concern over the trend of medical tourism among Nigerians, Obi cited a study by the Kano Independent Research Centre Trust (KIRCT), indicating an annual expenditure of $1.5 billion to $2 billion on medical tourism. He urged redirecting such substantial amounts towards domestic health sector investment, which would save lives and improve healthcare accessibility for Nigerians.

World Cancer Day, according to Obi, serves as a reminder for leaders to reflect on the critical role of the health sector in national development. He encouraged both leaders and citizens to adopt healthier lifestyles and choices, contributing to the overall well-being of the nation.

During the event, fans were seen climbing trees and rooftops to see Mikel Arteta’s squad as the players showcased the Premier League trophy. The procession included four buses, one of which carried the Arsenal Women’s team, winners of the inaugural Women’s Champions Cup this past February.

This celebration followed a heartbreaking 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Budapest on Saturday, where Arsenal ultimately fell in a penalty shootout after misses by Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes. Despite the European defeat, the Premier League title held immense significance for the team, coming after three consecutive seasons as runners-up.
