Rivers State Crisis: Okocha’s Perspective On Governor Fubara’s Reported Shift To APC

Addressing the political turmoil in the state that pitted Governor Fubara against his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, Okocha expressed his perspective on the possibility of Fubara joining the APC to bring about peace. The Rivers APC chairman asserted that Fubara’s potential move to the APC may not be driven by a genuine affinity for the party but rather as a strategic move to safeguard his political position. Responding to a query about whether Fubara’s defection to the APC could foster peace in Rivers State, Okocha stated in an interview published by The Nation on Sunday: “I don’t know what you mean by that, and I don’t know how to answer you, but take it this way, Governor Fubara was the candidate of the PDP, and his joining the APC is not the problem.”

He went on to highlight the existing tension in the ostensibly amicable relationship between Fubara and Wike, characterizing it as a ruse and a subterfuge. Okocha underscored the challenges posed by the strained relationship and questioned the narrative that Fubara’s move to the APC would automatically bring peace, particularly concerning his communication with State Assembly members.

Expanding on his viewpoint, Okocha accused Governor Fubara of lacking sincerity in implementing the terms of the peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu. According to Okocha, Fubara’s actions exhibit a lack of consistency, with conflicting statements and actions that undermine the terms of the peace deal.
