INEC Seeks Nigerian Air Force Assistance In Airlifting Election Materials For By-Elections
Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has requested the assistance of the Nigerian Air Force in transporting election materials for the upcoming February 3 rerun and by-elections…..CONTINUE READING
Yakubu conveyed this appeal during a meeting with the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, in Abuja on Monday.
The INEC is set to conduct by-elections and re-run elections across 26 states of the federation this Saturday. In nine states, by-elections will determine two senators, four members of the House of Representatives, and three members of the state Houses of Assembly to replace individuals who either passed away or resigned from their memberships in the national and state assemblies.
Re-run elections are scheduled in other states at specified constituencies or polling units as directed by the election appeal tribunals.
These elections aim to fill vacancies in three senatorial districts, 17 federal, and 28 state constituencies, spanning 80 local government areas, 575 registration areas/wards, and 8,934 polling units, involving 4,904,627 registered voters. Out of these, 4,613,291 Permanent Voters’ Cards have been collected, as reported by the commission.
Acknowledging the enormity of deploying election materials, Yakubu emphasized the need to seek the support of the Nigerian Air Force in delivering materials to three locations in the North East, South East, and South West geopolitical zones of the country.
He stated, “In handling such a massive national assignment, the commission cannot do it alone. That is why we seek to mobilize every national asset, including the Nigerian Air Force.”
Yakubu highlighted that the law empowers the commission to seek the support of security, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies for material delivery and the protection of election officials, as stipulated in Section 27(3) of the Electoral Act 2022.
“With the elections scheduled for this weekend, materials are being delivered to numerous locations in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria,” he added.
