The Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal initially ousted Yusuf on September 20, replacing him with the All Progressives Congress candidate, Nasiru Gawuna. The Court of Appeal in Abuja upheld this decision on November 17. However, the Supreme Court overturned these rulings on January 12.
A statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, dismissed a document circulating on social media that suggested a four-term agreement between the governor and the Presidency. The statement emphasized that the document was fictional and lacked any truth.
The governor clarified that the alleged agreement, indicating his switch to the APC, dissolution of the five Emirates, cessation of illegal structure demolitions, and the establishment of the Kano Elders Council, should be disregarded.
Governor Yusuf affirmed his commitment to delivering on his mandate, secured through the popular votes of the people and affirmed by the Supreme Court. The statement declared that political maneuvers would not deter him from implementing his projects for the people of Kano state, emphasizing that any political decisions would adhere to the rule of law and executive powers vested in the office of the Executive Governor.
The statement reiterated that the establishment of the Kano Elders Council was the governor’s personal initiative, aimed at addressing the state’s socio-economic and political challenges. It emphasized that Governor Yusuf was not under any pressure to form the council.
The governor’s spokesman insisted that Governor Yusuf did not engage in any pre-judgment agreements and urged the public to dismiss the orchestrated fallacy by enemies of progress. The statement commended the Supreme Court for delivering a landmark judgment that upheld justice, equity, and fairness, preserving the judiciary’s integrity.
