MDCAN Issues Extended Strike Warning To Federal Government
The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria has decided to prolong the ultimatum it previously issued to the Federal Government for an additional six weeks. The press conference where the communique was announced had the signatures of its President, Prof Mohammad Mohammad, and Secretary-General, Dr. Daiyabu Ibrahim……CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
It is worth recalling that the association had initially given an ultimatum to the Federal Government in 2023, set to expire on January 31, 2024, with the decision to initiate a strike to be made at the Uyo NEC meeting. However, the association has chosen to extend the ultimatum by six weeks to facilitate further consultations with the government.
The association made it clear that industrial harmony could no longer be guaranteed if the government fails to meet its demands after the expiration of the six-week grace period. The NEC expressed disappointment at the lack of significant progress despite numerous engagements with relevant government agencies on the association’s demands.
The NEC highlighted issues such as the shortfall in salaries and income loss by Honorary consultants (Clinical lecturers), stemming from the government’s failure to implement the universal applicability of CONMESS to all medical and dental officers in public service. Additionally, the lack of progress in increasing the retirement age of hospital consultants was emphasized.
The communique revealed, “NEC resolved to extend the ultimatum earlier given to the government by six weeks (up to 10/03/2024), to address all pending issues between the government and the association. MDCAN cannot guarantee industrial harmony after the expiration of the above ultimatum if its demands are not met.”
NEC also noted that the budgetary allocation to the sector has consistently remained below 5% of the country’s overall budget, and the per capita spending on health has experienced a noticeable decline.
