In November, the Court of Appeal in Abuja dismissed a petition filed by Ardo challenging Fintiri’s win in the 2023 polls. Justice Ugochukwu Ogakwu, while delivering the ruling, upheld the previous decision of the Tribunal led by Justice Theodora Uloho. The Tribunal had dismissed Ardo’s petition, deeming it incompetent and not properly filed.

The Court of Appeal determined that the appellants failed to substantiate allegations of corrupt practices and non-compliance with the Electoral Act against INEC. Justice Ogakwu stated that there was no valid basis to grant the appeal.

Following Fintiri’s declaration as the election winner, the SDP candidate and his party filed a petition at the State Governorship Election Tribunal. Ardo sought to annul Fintiri’s re-election, citing substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act, allegations of corrupt practices, and instances of threats and violence during the electoral process.

Despite appealing the tribunal’s judgment, Ardo’s petition was ultimately dismissed by the appellate court. Subsequently, the SDP candidate took the matter to the Supreme Court but later opted to withdraw his appeal against the governor’s victory.

  • He is personally distressed by the incident.

  • His late father was a primary school teacher who taught at Awole Dada, a location less than 15 kilometers from where the kidnapping occurred.

  • He noted that if such an event had occurred during his father’s time there in 1959 and 1960, his own life might not have been possible.
