In his New Year address, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State acknowledged the challenges faced by his administration over the past seven months, attributing them to the removal of fuel subsidy and the fluctuation in the Naira to Dollar exchange rate. Governor Makinde detailed measures taken, including the Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery program, which provided immediate relief through food packages for the poorest population, extended to pensioners and civil servants. The administration also implemented low-interest loans for traders, agropreneurs, and smallholder farmers, distributed grains to farmers, and facilitated low-cost transportation through Omituntun Buses.
Despite these efforts, the governor acknowledged that rising inflation rates posed ongoing challenges. However, he reassured the public that the implementation of the 2024 Budget of Economic Recovery would reinforce reforms aimed at securing the state’s economy.
Governor Makinde sought continued support from the people, highlighting the administration’s commitment to tough decisions that would lead to prosperity for all. He outlined upcoming projects, including road constructions, industrial hubs, solid minerals revenue, Independent Power Project, and initiatives to boost tourism.
In concluding, Governor Makinde urged citizens to see the bigger picture, envisioning a state where investors and tourists feel safe. He implored collaboration in implementing the rule of law, recognizing that enforcing laws might require stepping on toes, and expressed optimism that 2024 would mark a positive turning point for the state.
