The majority of these youths, consisting mainly of commercial motorcyclists and teenagers, expressed their concerns about the escalating tension in Kano leading up to the Supreme Court judgment on the legal dispute surrounding Governor Abba Yusuf’s election.
According to Nivo News, the Supreme Court has scheduled Thursday for the hearing on the contested election. The Court of Appeal in Abuja had earlier upheld the removal of Governor Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, declaring Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress as the duly elected governor. The State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal had also previously declared Gawuna the winner of the state governorship election held on March 18.
Residing in Sagamu, the Northern youths urged caution in handling the governorship crisis to prevent bloodshed. Carrying placards with various inscriptions, they emphasized the potential spread of violence to the South if conflict erupted in Kano due to the disputed poll.
Some of the inscriptions on their placards included messages like ‘Avoid bloodshed! Ensure justice for Kano,’ ‘Safe today but tomorrow,’ ‘We are behind our mandate,’ and ‘We are safe in the South but injustice in Kano may spread violence,’ among others.
Speaking to the press, one of the protesters, Nasir Sarkin, an indigene of Kano, expressed their concern about the situation in Kano and emphasized their demand for justice for Governor Abba Yusuf. He called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene to prevent potential unrest in Kano.
Another protester, Tijani Jubril, urged the judiciary to validate Yusuf’s mandate as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission in the March 18 election.
