INEC Called Upon By PDP For Immediate Fresh-Elections In 25 Rivers State Constituencies (Details)
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) reiterates the call for fresh elections to fill the 25 seats reportedly vacated by its lawmakers in the Rivers State Assembly. This decision was reached during an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday, as announced by the acting national chairman of the party, Amb. Umar Iliya Damagum, in a briefing with journalists……CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Damagum clarified that the emergency meeting was convened to address unfolding political developments in Rivers State. Emphasizing that there is no remedy for the 25 lawmakers who allegedly defected from the PDP, he stated that their only option to return to the legislature is to seek fresh nomination and re-election under the banner of any political party of their choosing, following constitutional and electoral provisions.
He highlighted the lawmakers’ awareness of the consequences of their defection and the absence of party division to justify their actions. The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly had officially declared their seats vacant in line with constitutional provisions.
Damagum urged the former lawmakers not to be misled by false assurances in Abuja and clarified that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cannot be prevented from conducting fresh elections. He cited Section 84 (15) of the Electoral Act, 2022, emphasizing that no court has the authority to halt INEC from conducting elections in constituencies with vacancies.
The PDP called on INEC to schedule fresh elections in the 25 Rivers State constituencies where vacancies occurred due to the lawmakers’ defection. The party also urged its members in Rivers State to stand united in defense of constitutional democracy and the rule of law.
