The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused Vice Chancellors (VCs), political officeholders, and traditional rulers of circumventing due process in staff employment within universities. Prof Osodeke pointed out that, despite the absence of job advertisements in universities over the past six to ten years, the staff strength has significantly increased. He criticized VCs for employing individuals from various backgrounds, including governors, senators, and traditional rulers, without adhering to the traditional process of advertising vacancies and conducting rigorous interviews.
“Unfortunately, university employment has turned into a constituency project, and we have to struggle to reverse this misnomer and bring sanity to the system,” stated Prof Osodeke.
During the UNIUYO Heroes’ Day celebration, Prof Osodeke commended those honored for their sacrifices in the pursuit of truth and better conditions. He emphasized the need to resist compromises and maintain selflessness in the fight for the improvement of Nigerian universities.
In a keynote address, Professor Desmond Wilson expressed concern about external influences compromising the struggles of ASUU, cautioning members to remain committed. The UNIUYO Vice-Chancellor, Prof Nyaudoh Ndaeyo, represented by Prof Ben Etuk, acknowledged ASUU’s role in enhancing the well-being of university staff, urging the association to continue its efforts.
Additionally, ASUU in UNIUYO released over N1.7 million to 15 deserving students and conferred heroes’ awards on distinguished past leaders of the branch, including Dr Etop Ndiyo, Prof Desmond Wilson, Prof Edet Akpan, Prof Joseph Ushie, Prof Aniesua Essiet, and Prof Ashong Ashong. The financial rewards were intended to support academically outstanding students in completing their courses of study successfully.
