In assessing the recent off-cycle elections, Sani commended the improvement in the country’s constitutional framework and emphasized the pivotal role elections play in democracy. He congratulated Nigerians on successfully conducting the elections, underscoring the importance of a functioning government for delivering democracy’s dividends.
Addressing concerns such as voter disenfranchisement and political thuggery, Sani acknowledged the need for improvement, urging citizens and politicians to uphold democratic values. He stressed the importance of peaceful contests, condemning undemocratic practices like vote-buying and violence.
Sani acknowledged the evolving nature of democracy, emphasizing the ongoing work required to enhance electoral processes. He expressed optimism about the ongoing review of the Electoral Act by the National Assembly, highlighting the need for clearer laws to address existing challenges.
Regarding the proposed establishment of an Electoral Offences Commission, Sani expressed support but underscored the importance of changing citizens’ attitudes and enforcing existing laws effectively. He called for a collective commitment to respecting and abiding by electoral laws.
Sani identified areas for improvement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, emphasizing the need for unambiguous electoral laws to eliminate ambiguity and prevent misinterpretation.
Concerning the judiciary’s role, Sani emphasized its crucial role in ensuring a fair and impartial legal system. He called for a judiciary committed to the nation’s progress and expressed concern about potential executive influence on the judiciary.
Responding to concerns raised by Atiku Abubakar about the country slipping into a one-party state, Sani emphasized the need to address fundamental issues causing political challenges rather than focusing solely on symptoms.
Regarding criticisms of the National Assembly’s spending, Sani urged citizens to demand accountability and reject monetary inducements during elections. He emphasized the need for citizens to hold politicians accountable and suggested benchmarks for limiting excessive spending.
On allegations of a lack of commitment to accountability and transparency in President Bola Tinubu’s government, Sani pointed out the absence of evidence supporting such claims and questioned the need for accountability inquiries.
In addressing security challenges, Sani stressed the importance of accountability, suggesting that individuals responsible for security should be held accountable for their actions and spending.
